The forklift is a material handling machine utilized to raise and move loads from one location to another. Each component of a forklift has a specific function. Different components can be utilized to move the load either vertically or horizontally.
Mast
The components used to lift and lower the load is referred to as the forklift mast. There are various kinds of masts for lifting loads to different heights: simplex, duplex, triplex and quad.
Power Supply
Forklifts have four different ways of being powered: gas, electric, diesel and propane. The battery is situated in the cab underneath the seat. The propane tank is located on the rear of the truck. The fuel tank on diesel and gas forklifts is underneath the rear of the truck.
Cab
Positioned in the middle of the truck is the forklift cab. This is where the operator sits and accesses all the informational gauges and controls. The gas pedal, steering wheel, brake, lifting controls and tilting controls are all located inside the cab.
Frame
The truck frame carries all the largest parts of the forklift, like the counterweights, that are located at the back to prevent the truck from tipping when loaded. The frame consists of the overhead guard that protects the operator. The undercarriage holds the driveshaft, axles and wheels.
